Everybody starts green.

The straight story on oilfield work: the hours, the money, the gear, and the words nobody stops to explain. Free to read. No sign-up.

What you need to know

  • The days are long. 12 hours is normal, and two weeks straight is normal.
  • The pay is good because of the hours. Overtime is where the money is.
  • Most jobs want a clean drug test, a SafeLand card and an H2S class.
  • You can stop any job that looks unsafe, and you can always ask.
  • Show up early, stay off your phone and keep busy. That gets you called back.

Why we built this

We work in the field. We once worked with a welding inspector who knew welding inside and out but had never set foot on a pipeline. He didn't know what a skid was. When one of us first came out here, he thought a light plant was a power plant.

Everybody starts somewhere, and most guys are too proud to ask. So we wrote it down, crawl, walk, run. Every time we learn something on the job, it goes here.
